Most of the officials mourners were leaving, bustling towards the gates, shaking hands and brushing off their robes, making certain none of Dumbledore's heresy against the Ministry was clinging to them. Left behind were students wandering the grounds in groups or pairs or alone, prolonging this last contact with their Headmaster for as long as possible. Ron and Hermione, by silent agreement, took a meandering path towards the lake, avoiding both groups. Hermione occasionally sniffled and shook her head while Ron kicked at sticks cluttering the ground.
The lake was dark and roiling, with large air bubbles and they could, unusually, hear the Merpeople close to the surface, muttering, singing and occasionally wailing.
"They've having a wake for Dumbledore," Hermione said sadly.
"Sounds more like a party to me, although I suppose Dumbledore wouldn't have minded that," Ron said, peering in. "Eurgh, don't look, Hermione," he said, tugging her back. "I hope they don't care when I die. Who knew they did it that way?"
"Merpeople have a complex mating ritual, Ron," Hermione said. "You see, they need..."
"Yeah, Hermione, I saw," he interrupted. "I don't need to know more, I just need to forget." He pulled her towards the nearby bench. "Come away from there. I mean it, you'll be scarred for life."
Hermione joined him, her brief burst of laughter turning to a sigh. They watched the rolling waters of the lake quietly for a few moments before Ron began to stir. "We should be getting back," he said. "Mum's probably in a dither, wanting to get home safely."
"Oh, not yet, please, Ron. Stay here with me for a while longer," Hermione pleaded before turning bright red at the yearning tone of her voice.
"I mean, I still look a sight, my eyes are all red and my nose..." she muttered.
"Nah, you're fine," Ron said, awkwardly patting a particular unruly patch of hair down. "You always look great." She turned towards him, mouth slightly open and it was his turn to blush at the unintended meaning behind his words. "I mean, ergh, well, you've got really good...skin."
"Thank you, Ron," she said, slightly amused. She smiled and leaned over to kiss him, sweet and strong but all too briefly.
Stunned for a moment, he just looked at her, before he began stuttering out, "Your hands are pretty too, small and you keep your nails nice. And did I ever mention that your nose..."
"Oh hush, Ron," she said, staring fixedly at the horizon. "I just felt like it okay?"
"S'alright by me," he replied, stretching out his long legs in front of him and sliding an arm across the back of the bench. "You're right, maybe we should stay out here a little longer. Percy's probably still in there and I don't think I can pass up the opportunity to hit him another time."

This section contains original dialouge from Chapter Five of Deathly Hallows, which I'm fairly certain you'll recognize. Hopefully, Jo's generosity in letting us into the Potterverse makes this intrusion acceptable.
Thanks again to kit_the_brave speediest beta in the Western world who kept the apostrophes in line. (She used her librarian voice to chase them back into place. They aren't nearly as well-behaved for me.) Thanks also to redlightspecia1 for keeping a close eye out for anvils in the sky while Hermione looked for Ron.
